Detailed information on Orinoco Furniture Co. Federal Revival Bed Frame (c. 1927–1932)

The Bed

An extraordinary example of early 20th-century American craftsmanship, this full-size bed frame was produced by The Orinoco Furniture Company of Columbus, Indiana, circa 1927–1932. A masterwork of the Federal Revival movement, it features fine marquetry, book-matched veneers, and retains its original DuPont DUCO lacquer finish—a hallmark of cutting-edge furniture manufacturing in the late 1920s.

This bed is more than a piece of furniture; it’s a window into the evolution of industrial artistry in American design—where timeless neoclassical form met modern technology.

Design & Construction

→ Marquetry Inlay: The headboard and footboard both display an elegant urn-and-swag motif, hand-cut and inlaid into a rich walnut veneer. This classical design was inspired by the Federal and Hepplewhite styles of the late 18th century, symbolizing refinement and balance.

→ Book-Matched Veneers: The panels are veneered in figured mahogany and maple, laid in symmetrical patterns that highlight the natural grain.

→ Solid Hardwood Frame: The frame is structurally sound, built on solid hardwood rails with original joinery and casters.

→ Original Finish: The label reading “Finished with DuPont DUCO” identifies one of the earliest uses of nitrocellulose lacquer—a revolutionary finish introduced in the mid-1920s for its luminous sheen and durability.

→ Manufacturer Label: Features an intact gold medallion from The Orinoco Furniture Company and stamped model number 3790, corresponding to the company’s suite group pattern numbers used in their catalogs.

History & Provenance

Founded in 1890 in Columbus, Indiana, The Orinoco Furniture Company became a leading producer of high-grade bedroom and dining furniture. The company was known for its precision woodworking and use of fine veneers—a distinction that made Orinoco a respected name across the Midwest and beyond.

By the late 1920s, Orinoco partnered with DuPont to incorporate their newly developed DUCO lacquer finish, a symbol of modernity and craftsmanship. The company’s attention to materials and finish set it apart from many contemporaries until its closure around 1940.

The Federal Revival movement that inspired this design was popular during the 1910s–1930s, evoking the grace and symmetry of early American neoclassicism. This bed’s urn-and-swag marquetry is a textbook example of the style—refined, elegant, and understated.

Condition

This bed remains in very good original condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. Veneers are intact, marquetry remains defined, and the original finish retains a soft satin luster. Structurally sound and ready for display or gentle use.

Restoration is not required, but a light polish or finish stabilization could further enhance its sheen while preserving its authentic patina.

Value & Collectibility

Pieces from The Orinoco Furniture Company are increasingly sought after for their combination of classical artistry and early 20th-century innovation. The survival of the factory label, DUCO finish tag, and stamped model number significantly enhances the piece’s provenance and collector appeal.
